Stalwart Universe

The smell of saltwater, rusted metal, and rope friction assaulted her nose. Yrsa stood at the front of the longship with 60 warriors waiting for orders. She was the only female jarl of their homeland, and her warriors were proud of that fact. A scar ran across her face and nose, ruining any beauty and replacing it with authority. Today, she would lead the warriors into battle and send her enemies to hell.

Have you ever stood in a situation where your latest gear choice feels out of place despite your best efforts? It's disappointing and frustrating and sometimes even ruins the experience completely.

LARP'ing should be fun and easy, and it's vexing when it becomes less enjoyable.

Our universes are our solution to that. We make our universes recognisable and distinct to make it easy to mix and match. And the Stalwart universe is exactly that.

- In this year came dreadful forewarnings over the land of Northumbria, terrifying the people most woefully: these were immense sheets of lightning and whirlwinds and fiery dragons were seen flying through the sky. A great famine soon followed these signs, and not long after in the same year, on the sixth day before the ides of January, the harrowing inroads of heathen men destroyed the church of God in Lindisfarne by robbery and slaughter.”

- The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, 800 B.C.E.

Inspiration for Stalwart

The Stalwart Universe takes inspiration from the Scandinavian Vikings, alongside other Northern European cultures like the Celts, Saxons, highland warriors and Normans. These were all fierce and brave warrior cultures but with a softer side. The Vikings were well-known as tradesmen, and the Celts were mentioned in historical Roman and Greek texts where they were praised for their cleanliness and derided for their lack of wine. Unlike popular belief, the Celts and the Vikings were not the same people. However, there is evidence that the Celts and Scandinavian cultures came into contact with each other through the ages. Some theories suggest that they share more history than originally believed. While the Celts and Normans are still considered different cultures, the Stalwarts are inspired by both.
Furthermore, the Stalwart universe covers a large section of history, ranging from 600 B.C.E. to about 1050 C.E., so there is plenty of room for many cultures.

Colours and Materials

The colours of the Stalwart Universe are kept in the same earthen, natural and dark or subdued colours. We use these colours to give your character a rustic and hardy appearance - perfect for Barbarians, Druids, Vikings, or Dwarves. Fur features quite a bit, as it was popular during that time period, though we use imitation fur for this purpose. Norse runes and Celtic swirls are featured as ornamentation. Rugged leather and simple metals make sturdy armour, weapons and clothes. And, of course, the horns aren't on the helmets but are used for drinking.

Historical Sword

Another project that we had with Sagnlandet Lejre revolved around the Oseberg Tapestry. The tapestry is from around 834 C.E., and despite the damage, it contains several images of shields. From these images, we worked together to create the GastiR shield, as historically accurate a shield as we can make. This includes the patterns on the shields, how we recreated the leather cover used, and the grain of the wood on the back, all the way down to the grip. We think the result speaks for itself.

Stalwart Characters

If your favourite character to roleplay is a Nordic woodsman or brutal tribal warrior, you may be a Stalwart! This collection will transform your LARP game into the rolling hills of the north, playing to the tune of frigid ocean waves and untamed wilderness. The Stalwart are sturdy and hardened folk with tools and weapons that prepare them for any foe - or celebratory drink.

A Stalwart’s gear and fashion include wool costuming; protective leather, chainmail and plate armour; round shields; Viking axes; longbows; unique costume accessories like cloak pink; and camp essentials such as drinking horns.

Stalwart Universe

The Stalwart universe embraces all of the above elements. It is a way for you to embrace your inner raider or become a hearty warrior from a culture based around tribe and honour.
